The Importance of Choosing "Just Right" Books

We have talked a great deal about the importance of choosing "just right" books; meaning that they are not too easy or too difficult.  Research tells us that one of the most beneficial ways to grow as a reader is by spending time reading books that are a good fit (at our individual reading level).  IPICK is a simple strategy (from "The Daily Five" by
Gail Boushey and Joan Moser) to help students determine which books are a good fit.

History of the World in Two Hours

This amazing documentary provides some perspective and background knowledge that will help facilitate our learning about the peopling of the Americas in Social Studies, as well as our study of geology in Science this year.

The Day After Peace

This is the documentary about how UN Peace Day (September 21st) was created by Jeremy Gilley's organization called Peace One Day.  This year it falls on a Saturday and the theme is: Who will you make peace with?   We will all mark the day on Sunday September 22nd at ACS by wearing something white.  Each elementary classroom will display their peace related activities on our doors in keeping with our own theme:
Opening our doors to peace.
